The Sea of Glass and the Cloud of Witnesses
In the last article on The Sea of Glass we talked about the underlying spiritual presence of the sea of glass on which we can stand while our body-laden souls pass through whatever oppressive choppy seas of earthly turmoil we may have to navigate. The spirit is meant to mature to become an anchor for the soul rather than to be subjected to the soul in its susceptibility to earthly vacillations. The sea of glass is the solid sea upon which the spirit stands in victory over the presently-emerging beast system and its assaults against the minds and souls of our people.
Following on this came more insight relative to the “cloud” of witnesses of Heb. 12:1. We cannot see it, but we are surrounded by a gathering of witnesses who are watching our progress. I believe the witnesses are glorying in our triumphs and moaning over our falls.
While I absolutely do not believe in the Roman Catholic practices of praying to dead saints or any practice that seeks to contact the dead or angels, I do believe the saints on the other side of the veil play a more active role in ministering on our behalf in intercession as well as in the form of active angelic activity that is now unrecognizable to us. We can believe this because we know that Christ is making intercession for us now (Heb. 7:25), and that all saints beyond the veil participate in worship and continue to emulate their Lord in intercession (Rev. 5:8-12); and we know from Rev. 22:8-9 that saints beyond the veil do function as angels.
The point of this is only to note a connection I am seeing between our spirit participation as overcomers on the sea of glass, and the cloud of witnesses surrounding us. I believe that the “cloud” of witnesses who have gone before us is also on the same “sea” of glass as that on which our own spirits stand, though there is of course no visible interchange or communion between us and them—at least “not at present.”
It may in fact be that the “cloud” of the witnesses and the “sea” of glass are of one and the same essence if not identically the same. Such a connection is prophetically possible based on Paul’s word (I Cor. 10:2) that Israel was “baptized” into Moses “in the cloud and in the sea.” Paul’s linking of the “cloud” and of the “sea” may have a significant prophetic correspondence to our relationship to the “sea” of glass and the “cloud” of witnesses.
Is there a practical point to this or am I just engaging in revelatory speculation? Be assured, there is a practical connection to make.
That connection is based in Elisha’s prayer for his servant when their town was surrounded by hordes of Syrians coming after Elisha (II Ki. 6:17). The servant could only see the surrounding hordes and was afraid. But Elisha saw much more. He saw into the heavenly realm as it was brought to bear on earth in that moment. And so he prayed for his servant to see likewise:
Then Elisha prayed and said, "O LORD, I pray, open his eyes that he may see." And the LORD opened the servant's eyes and he saw; and behold, the mountain was full of horses and chariots of fire all around Elisha.
The practical point then of the sea of glass and the cloud of witnesses is this: we are entering a period of earth history when not only are the hordes of the earth becoming increasingly mounted against God’s people (Ps.2:1-3); but we are also to begin witnessing an increasing permeation of the veil that now blinds us to the heavenly realm. This permeation will see increased interaction between saints here and the angels, including—as Rev. 22:9 shows—saints that have already crossed the veil in death.
This is not something we will initiate, but is simply part of the heavenly reality invasion that characterizes the Lord’s return. The sea of glass and the cloud of angelic witnesses will become more real to us in the same way that Christ walked on that sea when He came to the disciples. (Note already how more and more people are reporting visions of transport to heaven and hell to bring back testimony to us of these places.)
Right now, when it comes to real time events, our supposedly “prophetic” vision is very confined to the level of Elisha’s servant. We are extremely conscious of the earth-side buildup of the human hordes gathered against our Lord and us, His anointed ones. That consciousness leaves us frozen in a place of extreme fear as with Elisha’s servant.
But the Lord intends to “open our eyes” to the heavenly imminence that surrounds us now—even the cloud of witnesses on the sea of glass where our spirits are already anchored. The veil between us and those ahead of us is getting thinner by the day. Shortly, we are going to begin seeing breakouts of inter-veil activity with our angelic observers.
This heaven-class vision, akin to infrared “night vision” is going to relieve us of the overbearing consciousness we have of the earthly hordes surrounding us now. And it will embrace the power even to “smite hordes with blindness” and obtain victory over them on that sea. (Neither Elijah nor Elisha was ever overcome by an earthly army.)
